Reiki

What is reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low, or out of balance, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force energy". So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life force energy."

Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.

Reiki is NOT a religion nor does it offend any religion.  In fact, the word from the Japanese means, “universal spirit energy”.   The general belief is that this holistic healing process  originated in Tibet thousands of years ago,  was rediscovered in the 1800’s by Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese educator and monk, during his quest to learn how to heal the sick by laying on of hands.

Reiki is safe and non-invasive.  Today it is used to facilitate relaxation and recovery, decrease anxiety and treat pain in hospices, nursing homes, long term care facilities, emergency rooms, operating rooms, organ transplantation care units, pediatric, neonatal and OB/GYN units. It can be a helpful addition to conventional therapy for HIV/AIDS and cancer patients. Reiki can be learned by both the person experiencing the pain and his or her caregivers, and can improve the quality of life of many chronic pain sufferers.

Many clinical and medical studies are now showing that Reiki treatments, when used to compliment standard medical practices and pain management methods, offer a measurable improvement of pain management and quality of life.

Reiki is a complement to treatment by a physician. It does not provide medical services nor is it a medical diagnostic tool. However, there is a growing body of opinion that using integrative and complimentary medical practices that take advantage of all parts of the care spectrum is more effective (and cost-effective) than allopathic treatment alone.

  • How Does reiki work?

We are alive because life force is flowing through us. Life force flows within the physical body though pathways called chakras, meridians and nadis. It also flows around us in a field of energy called the aura. Life force nourishes the organs and cells of the body, supporting them in their vital functions. When this flow of life force is disrupted or blocked, it causes diminished function in one or more of the organs and tissues of the physical body.

The life force is responsive to thoughts and feelings. It becomes disrupted when we accept, either consciously or unconsciously, negative thoughts or feelings about ourselves. These negative thoughts and feelings attach themselves to the energy field and cause a disruption in the flow of life force. This diminishes the vital function of the organs and cells of the physical body.

Reiki heals by flowing through the affected parts of the energy field and charging them with positive energy. It raises the vibratory level of the energy field in and around the physical body where the negative thoughts and feelings are attached. This causes the negative energy to break apart and fall away. In so doing, Reiki clears, straightens and heals the energy pathways, thus allowing the life force to flow in a healthy and natural way.

  • Reiki and Pain Management

There have been a number of studies showing a highly significant reduction in pain following the Reiki treatment.  Children and animals are especially responsive to this non-invasive and loving energy.  This self-help technique does not require any system of belief or thought to be activated and can be easily incorporated as a self-help method to balance our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual bodies.

People use reiki to decrease pain, ease muscle tension, speed healing, and improve sleep.  It is sometimes used to help people who suffer from pain or discomfort from cancer or other diseases. Some people who have undergone chemotherapy treatment say the treatments genuinely aid them in moving through the reteatments and dealing with the after affects with more comfort and  they felt better and had less nausea after undergoing a reiki session.

Reiki works so simply and on all levels, ie physical, spiritual, mental and emotional. Therefore whatever is the cause of the pain or discomfort, such as a headache or a migraine (stress, emotional issues, hormones, physical issues)Reiki will be able to work on the cause. The very least Reiki can do is bring relaxation so just doing that would be helpful to someone whose muscles in their head are tight causing the headache or migraine. Reiki can also enhance the positive properties of any medication you take therefore reducing any possible side effects.

Reiki has had a positive affect on all forms of illness and discomfort, such as head or stomach aches, bee stings, colds, flu, tension and anxiety as well as serious illness like heart disease, fibromyalgia, cancer, etc. The side effects of regular medical treatments have also been reduced or eliminated with reiki treatments. This includes the negative effects of chemotherapy, post operative pain and depression as well as improving the healing rate and reducing the time needed to stay in the hospital.

Reiki works in conjunction with regular medical or psychological treatment. If one has a medical or psychological condition, it is recommended that one see a licensed health care professional in addition to receiving Reiki treatments. Reiki energy works in harmony with all other forms of healing, including drugs, surgery, psychological care or any other method of alternative care and will improve the results.

  • Reiki for animals

Our animal companions bring so much to our lives. Their joy of living is an example to us. By offering them the healing that Reiki can offer we give something back to them for all that they have given to us.

Animals respond well to Reiki. Reiki can be used for all types of illnesses, injuries and emotional problems. Reiki treatments enhance and compliment ongoing traditional veterinary care.  Reiki sessions promote speedier healing of physical trauma caused by accidents or surgery, remove pain from the animal's body, relieve stress and bring balance.  Using Reiki with animals can accelerate their natural healing process, ease pain, improve or help to continue their quality of life.  Reiki is often used to energize and revitalize an older animal as well as soothe and calm highly-strung, hyperactive or stressed animals.

During the upsetting time when an animal companion is preparing for transition, a Reiki session brings much peace and freedom from struggle and pain. The animal's human is also greatly supported and can even share in the preparation for transition. The bond between animal and human is respected and even deepened during this difficult time.
